Through the Years

The D Building was once a gymnasium for the Arlington Hall Junior College for Girls, the school that occupied the Shultz Center site during the early 20th century. Infrastructure for a swimming pool and basketball court are hidden under its floors, behind its walls, and in its ceilings.

The U.S. Army, after acquisition of the site in 1942, began construction of new facilities almost immediately. Some of the thirteen prospective barracks were ready by Halloween of the same year. The new buildings—the largest called Building A and Building B—were located just beyond the current Building A and B in parking lots 1 and 2.

The newest Shultz Center structure is Building B. Dedicated by Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on Oct. 23, 2023, the 200,000 square foot building hosts both training and conferencing facilities.
