The Cottages
The Grounds at NFATC
Through the Years
The oldest existing buildings on the NFATC grounds are the Cottages (the H and I buildings). These two “kit homes'” fabricated by Sears, Roebuck and Co. were built circa 1924-27. They predate the opening of Arlington Hall Junior College for Girls and were first used as housing for students and faculty from Dr. William Martin’s Sullins College in Bristol, Virginia, participating in school trips to Washington, DC.
Dr. William Martin purchased one hundred acres next to the cottages in 1925 and opened Arlington Hall Junior College for Girls (the E Building) in 1927 with thirty-five students living in the cottages while other buildings were constructed.

Later, the Cottages were used as faculty housing and, initially after the Army acquired the campus, housing for senior staff.
